A total eclipse occurs when the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon. The intensely bright disk of the Sun is replaced by the dark silhouette of the Moon, and the much fainter corona is visible. During any one eclipse, totality is visible only from at most a narrow track on the surface of the Earth. An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon. A hybrid eclipse is intermediate between a total and annular eclipse. At some points on the surface of the Earth it is visible as a total eclipse, whereas at others it is annular. Hybrid eclipses are rather rare. A partial eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are not exactly in line, and the Moon only partially obscures the Sun. This phenomenon can usually be seen from a large part of the Earth outside of the track of an annular or total eclipse. However, some eclipses can only be seen as a partial eclipse, because the umbra never intersects the Earth's surface. The match between the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon during a total eclipse is a coincidence. The Sun's distance from the Earth is about 400 times the Moon's distance, and the Sun's diameter is about 400 times the Moon's diameter. Because these ratios are approximately the same, the sizes of the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth appear to be approximately the same: about 0.5 degree of arc in angular measure.
Because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is an ellipse, as is the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon vary.[1][2] The magnitude of an eclipse is the ratio of the apparent size of the Moon to the apparent size of the Sun during an eclipse. An eclipse when the Moon is near its closest distance from the Earth (i.e., near its perigee) can be a total eclipse because the Moon will appear to be large enough to cover completely the Sun's bright disk, or photosphere; a total eclipse has a magnitude greater than 1. Conversely, an eclipse when the Moon is near its farthest distance from the Earth (i.e., near its apogee) can only be an annular eclipse because the Moon will appear to be slightly smaller than the Sun; the magnitude of an annular eclipse is less than 1. Slightly more solar eclipses are annular than total because, on average, the Moon lies too far from Earth to cover the Sun completely. A hybrid eclipse occurs when the magnitude of an eclipse is very close to 1: the eclipse will appear to be total at some locations on Earth and annular at other locations.[3]
The Earth's orbit around the Sun is also elliptical, so the Earth's distance from the Sun varies throughout the year. This also affects the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon, but not so much as the Moon's varying distance from the Earth. When the Earth approaches its farthest distance from the Sun (the aphelion) in July, this tends to favor a total eclipse. As the Earth approaches its closest distance from the Sun (the perihelion) in January, this tends to favor an annular eclipse.

i met my oma for the second time now...it's was another uplifting moment...her name is Oma Charlotte she's turning 97 very soon, at 96 years old, i was amazed by the woman...this is THE WOMAN WHO NEEDS SOME RESPECT...she's survived through 2 WORLD WARS...and i spent as much time as i could with her with my short time....with her....she's 96! it was such a blessing to be with her...she tells me she never worked a day in her life...but you haven't heard her stories yet...briefly...family mentioned when she went back to her home town and he says it was the last haus standing, sorry if i spelt wrong no time...for editing...
...when she got away with her 3 children she put the two on the carriage...and the eldest son helped push with her...80km...to next towns or nearby villages...she would stop by every couple days and to stay warm...he said they stayed in train stations...do you know how humbling that is for me? you don't even know ( and she tells me she's never worked a day in her life)
...and she tells me she never worked a day in her life...she mentioned...her husband always worked...she mentions her other sisters...still alive...95 92 years old...
...she just loved talking about her kids and grandkids...she survived cancer twice...and got laser eye surgery a few years ago...
...this woman...tough as nails...such a blessing to be with her...
she told me beautiful stories pretty simple...her husband..then she remarried...and then her children and grandchildren...and sisters...was a blessing...

This is one of the largest pieces I have ever made; the giant TIFF is about 21,000 pixels across (this one I uploaded is only 15,000 pixels across and has been downgraded to JPEG to fit inside the draconian upload requirements). I shot it one cool and crisp morning at Glacier National Park in this crystal clear lake that is fed by glacial runoff. It is comprised of 90 different photos that took a small eternity to mix together into an epic HDR. I've been thinking about having a 10-foot mural printed at walk-up resolution... but I am not quite sure where I would put it!

I am very inclined! I find it amazing how she can sing perfectly without any accent and then when her real voice comes out, it is nothing like her singing voice...her accent is gone...and what a dream come true for her too. When you are blessed you will know it and you will feel it too, reminds me so much of when I played music by the camp fire...more on that later...

Laos has remained virtually unchanged for half a century. Rich in history and culture, Laos and its peoples, more than 47 ethnic groups, harmonize life to ancient rhythms and traditions that evoke timeless Asia. Although the trappings of the modern world are becoming increasingly visible, Laos remains the least developed country in Southeast Asia. A country where experienced travelers will appreciate breathtaking scenery and ofcourse the friendly people.
It took us about 6 ½ hours for the approximately 230 km bus trip from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. The scenery was very good, Limestone mountains jutting sharply above the flat river valleys. The scenery got even better the further north we went, rolling high hills and scattered farms and villages. This snapshot was taken from our bus window on our way to the capitol of north central Laos. A crop of the original photo below. She seems lost for a moment.

Funds raised during this event will support The Salvation Army’s initiative to combat human trafficking. Sexual human trafficking occurs when individuals (primarily women and children) are sold and bought for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
These actions are accomplished through force, deception, abduction and abuse of power.

Although Indonesia was quite a beautiful place, it was also incredibly poor. Every country has its Hans Rosling predictable bell curve of wealth distribution, and Indonesia has so many people in it (almost as many people as the US), that a lot of people end up over on the left-hand side of the curve.

While walking around one of the cities there, I went off-track and ended up in a small settlement underneath a bridge. This family had set up here, found old couches and bits of refuse to build their home. This little girl was outside playing, arranging scraps of trash on the ground in interesting patterns.
I stopped and talked to the family for a short time. They were nice and didn't mind me taking photos. The mom seemed a little suspicious but then calmed down when she saw I was good with kids. The dad did not speak a lot of English, and I indicated to him that his house looked pretty sturdy compared to some of the others. He pointed to one across the river, which you can see in the upper part of the photo, an, in broken words, said that part of it had recently washed away. The dad was pretty happy with what he had built. He motioned to the little fence and then motioned to his little girl.

The Dr. Peter Centre Today In 2001, the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation successfully completed a $9.8-million Capital Campaign to build a new, four-storey Centre in Vancouver. On September 29, 2003 the Centre moved its Day Health Program participants, residents and staff into its new home. The new Dr. Peter Centre, with a larger capacity, will continue to assist the community and health-care system to cope with the growing AIDS crisis.

In 2008 Ron Sombilon Gallery has joined forces with the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation by donating an Art piece crafted specifically to create awareness and raise funds for the program through continued sales of the Art on our website. Artist Ron Sombilon has attempted to capture in Art, the reality and the stories of both those people who benefit from and support the Dr. Peter Center. On September 14, 2008, we participated in the third annual Passions, a benefit hosted by the Center. It featured 18 of Vancouver’s best restaurants and was aimed at fundraising through both a silent and live auction where our piece was sold for $1000. Throughout the evening Ron Sombilon Gallery’s photographers took pictures of the guests, participants and staff. We are commonly asked about the buildings which remain standing. Most were destroyed. What we see are those in remote areas and those which were so incredibly massive in size it was impossible to destroy them, even with the use of cannons. However, the entire Aztec capital was destroyed, and in its place is the capital of Mexico, Mexico City, and its hundreds of Catholic churches and cathedrals.
We are also asked if we believe the world will end in 2012? The answer is: "no." The next cycle of the Mayan calendar ends on 2012. Does this mean the Maya's believed the world end on 2012? No. It means the calendar ends. Yet, there is also a warning, and we must learn from the past, so let those with eyes, see.
