I was at Ethan's birthday party this weekend and then found out that the weekend edition of the Austin American Statesman featured an interview with me on the front page of the Arts section. They decided to run it during SXSW here in Austin.

This week, the 2007 Bloggies winners will be announced, and www.stuckincustoms.com is nominated. Since I am a local Austinite, Omar over at the Statesman took an interest and came over for an interview a few weeks ago. The article turned out pretty well, and he only misspelled my name once! :)

We were lucky enough to spend a week with Dr. David Sands, a microbiologist and geneticist (if those categories are even appropriate for someone so diverse). Almost every day we went out on nature hikes and never made it more than a few hundred yards from the main lodge. He would stop at just about any plant, pull it up, and rattle off a million interesting facts about it. He constantly had Ethan running to and fro to collect different samples and then enter a Socratic mode, helping him to figure out what everything he found meant.

Dr. Sands also brought several suitcases full of petri dishes and a variety of interesting bacteria that have been the subject of some tests in his lab back in Bozeman. Ethan and Dr. Sands did a number of experiments when they weren't out in the field exploring and discovering.

If the bees disappear, we’ll all be stung

April 17, 2009 - Some people think of bees as something to be feared. But without bees, humans would not be able to survive. It’s not just that they provide us with honey and wax; they are also one of the world’s most important pollinators. (In fact, bees native to Canada do not produce honey; honeybees are imports – and not all bees sting!)

Close to 90 per cent of the world’s plants rely on pollinators for fertilization and reproduction – including many of the plants we use for food. Beyond providing food, plants anchor soil to prevent erosion and fuel the nutrient cycle by decomposing and absorbing nutrients. Bees aren’t the only pollinators; butterflies, hummingbirds, and bats, among other animals, provide pollination. But bees are the most common pollinators. If we lose the bees, we lose the plants, and if we lose the plants, well…

The problem is we are losing bees. European honeybees, which are now used for pollination around the world, are declining in number, as are native North American bees. We know some, but not all, of the causes. The biggest threat is habitat loss and destruction, as increasingly natural areas are developed for housing and shopping centres and sterile lawns. Pesticide use is also killing bees and other pollinators.

But we can help our buzzing buddies in a number of ways – and at least one solution is a lot of fun for you and your kids.

First, we can stop using harmful pesticides to keep our lawns and gardens looking pretty. A growing number of provinces and municipalities, including Ontario and Quebec, have been banning these pesticides, known as cosmetic pesticides, not just to protect pollinators but also to protect human health. As well, a number of large retail stores have voluntarily taken these chemicals off their shelves.

One of the most fun ways we can all work to keep bee populations healthy is to create homes and habitat for the insects. If you have a garden, even a small one on your balcony, you can fill it with plants and flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. And because bees are easy to please, almost any garden will attract them – but remember that native plants will attract native bees while exotic plants will attract honeybees. Choosing a variety of plants that bloom throughout the season will keep bees buzzing from spring through fall.

You can also build homes for bees. Different kinds of bees have different housing needs, and it’s a great educational experience to learn how to build homes that will attract various types of bees. Canada is home to hundreds of bee species of all sizes. The smallest is the size of the head of a pin. Some live below ground, some above. And every species is beneficial to plants. The David Suzuki Foundation’s Queen of Green, Lindsay Coulter, has instructions on the foundation’s website on how to build three different kinds of bee dwelling, as well as a bee bath. It’s easy, fun, and educational.

In my hometown of Vancouver, the Environmental Youth Alliance has even started a project to place mason-bee “condos” throughout the city. Mason bees, also known as blue orchard bees, are small, about the size of a housefly. They are called mason bees because they create rows of cells in their nests divided with walls of clay. They are great pollinators – a single female will visit as many as 17 flowers a minute.

Last year, the EYA handed out 100 bee condos, each housing 36 bees, for residents to place in their yards. This year, the group is putting large condos, housing from 72 to 720 bees each, in parks and public spaces around the city. One is even designed to look like an urban condo. The project has so far spread more than 8,000 bees across the city, with the hope that they will reproduce. Urban areas are centres for bee diversity because of the diversity of flowering plants, habitats, and landscapes.

As I often point out, everything in nature is interconnected. Bees are a crucial part of this interconnection. If bees start to disappear, the effects will cascade throughout ecosystems, affecting all life, including humans. We must do everything we can to ensure that bees survive and flourish. Our own survival depends on it.

My last downtown photo of Dallas went over pretty well, so here is another from a different perspective. This is shot from the south side of Dallas, which is rarely seen since most of the commercial development is immediately to the north side of the city. I see this perspective a lot when driving up from Austin on regular trips up to the city. On the last trip, we were able to have a bit of extra time to go visit some of the Impressionist works at the museum here in downtown. It was nice to make it there after dodging all the modern art that just takes up a lot of space. I'm sure that's sort of a heretical thing to say, for someone so deep into the digital mediums, but I find most modern art to be inane. Any piece of modern art that requires a douche in a black turtleneck to describe what I am seeing is something that probably simply represents two minutes of my life I will never get back. Anyway, I'm sure some people like it... that's fine... just not for me.

I'll be sure to add some of my favorite Impressionist paintings in the next iteration of the "Things That Inspire Me" area of the site!

The chase

This is a clone picture taken in Milan. My boyfriend was the ‘human tripod’ here, holding the camera as still as humanly possible whilst I ran about in a public place, something with which I was not so confident - but there was only one man in the distance, so I got on with it. The first image we liked was the frontmost figure you see - she was a perfect haphazard shot, and all she needed was some perfunctory decoration in the form of a few accompanying clones. I didn’t share the final composite, strangely enough, until about 6 months later on Flickr. I wasn’t completely happy with the image until I made some tweaks to bring the characters closer together in harmony, and then, mid-cold-January, shared it online as a summery treat. It went down well, so I wondered why it had been stuck in the drawer for so long. Maybe it was tweaking those shadows that seemed like an endless job?

Below is a shot of a '57 Chevy. I saw it when walking back to the Magnolia Hotel on Friday night after dinner in Dallas. I took a photo of this pretty car under the blue lights of the porte-cochere, went upstairs to my room, downloaded the Topaz Bundle software, made the adjustments, and had the whole thing finished in less than 30 minutes. That quick turnaround speaks to how easy the software is to use.

This is an old temple near the main complex of Angkor Wat that sits high on a hill. At the bottom, a man gave me an option of riding an elephant to the top. I don't know why I didn't! I think I might have been in a hurry to see the sunset and the elephant looked old and ponderous.

So instead I decided to run up the temple hill like Rocky Balboa instead...

This is one of the most famous churches in Dresden that was bombed to bits in WWII. When it was rebuilt just recently, they reused some of the old burned black bricks in the construction. If you look close, you can still see them in there on occasion.

After the carpet bombing from the American and the British in 1945, the city of Dresden was left in ruins. in the past 60 years, the city has been meticulously rebuilt to its former glory.

I had a busy week at the game show in Leipzig... did some good deals and had good meetings... and I took the train on Saturday to Dresden to explore while all the other game people seem to go out to bars until 4 AM and drink, well, like Germans. I don't know if I am lame for going to bed early then waking up at 6 AM to catch an early train to a city to explore, but that's okay with me. Just me and my ipod and my camera...

I've been completely blown away by Dresden. It was recommended to me by a few friends and after spending the day there, I have to say that it compares closely to some of my best photography days around Italy or France. The Baroque architecture is stunning and it is completely unique and charming. I wish I had more time there, but I did get a bunch of good shots I will sprinkle into my stream in coming weeks.

I'm off to Ukraine next... Aeroflot here I come. I hope the mechanic does not come down the aisle again making a collection to buy a part for the plane. That never inspires confidence.

I had been hiking around Paris with way too much equipment for several hours. Whenever, I'm in photo-gatherin' mode, I am fairly tireless. I go from spot to spot like a Navy SEAL... but this day, I actually planned to have lunch at Chateau Rodin, the famous estate of the great French sculptor.

I had some food in my backpack that I had picked up at a small store a few hours before... a fresh baguette, a selection of cheeses, some fruit, and few truffles for dessert. I sat down at the edge of the fountain with my tripod up, aimed, and ready to go. I relaxed for a bit, listened to some Gotan Project on my iPod, and waited for the clouds to get just right.
