A journey to Etna - diary of an eruption (documentary trailer)
The volcano Etna is not an easy film set. The
photography has to deal with an incredible spectrum of
colour and texture, from the rainbows-like gases, to
the fussiness of the lapillis, to the high
contrast of snow covering black lava. The sound must be
able to render the full might of the explosions as
well as their faint echo in the vast silence of the
volcanic plateau: the Bove valley. The light goes
from the dazzling luminosity of snowy deserts to the
night for day effect of the sun filtering through a dark cloud of ashes. You need the macro-lens for the smallest flower symbol of Etna, but also the tele for staying alive filming the explosions. At time, fast and furious eruption can only be
filmed running with the camera on the shoulder, while
some other time, the sluggish lava requires longer
exposure.
But Etna is not a set, it is a constant presence, a
film background that has become itself an actor, from
the villages on the volcanos flank, to the old
craters, to the lava wall falling into the sea, to the
vast no mans land of past destruction. It is in these
colourful rocks that you will find the soul of the
people inhabiting this land, my great grandfather
called them the etnicoli, the people of the Etna

I thought this mountain and cloud formation was too perfect to ignore. Clouds always do strange things when they pass over mountains, but this one seemed particularly violent and unexpected.
This is not actually a volcano. it's just a regular old mountain in the Andes that had a nice little volcanic shape. I skirted around it for a while (skirting is quite a trek at this radius), until the angle seemed about right... although I had to skirt fast before the clouds changed. I have always wanted to take a photo of a volcano that is erupting. I climbed up part of a volcano that was erupting in Costa Rica, and you could see the red rocks, but I got absolutely zero good shots. Oh well... some day!
